American Indian Herbal Medicine:

We often associate herbal medicine with the Chinese, but other ancient cultures also practiced herbal medicine. Right here in America, American Indians practiced their own version of herbal medicine.

It's really amazing that many of the herbs that the Chinese practitioners used were also used by American Indians. The plants were different in some ways, but each belonged to the same "family" of plants. The ways in which the plants were used by ancient Chinese cultures and ancient American Indian cultures are very, very similar.

According to Indian lore, the Creator or the Great Spirit provided many ways to heal the body, and for every human ailment, there is a cure provided by Mother Nature. All animals and all humans must stay in tune with the earth in order to be healthy. According to Indian lore, all human ailments are caused by an imbalance with nature.

Those who practice herbal medicine based on information handed down through generations of American Indians don't practice as a hobby. This isn't a little pastime. Herbal medicine IS science that is based upon observations made over thousands of years.

No one should attempt to prescribe herbal medicines for themselves anymore than they should try to prescribe prescription medicines for themselves. The government regulates the practice of convention medicine and use of prescription drugs, but there is no government regulation of herbs or the practice of herbal medicine.

That doesn't mean that herbalists aren't trained, though. It only means that so far the government hasn't decided to regulate the practice of American Indian herbal medicine. That could change, but American Indians are doing everything they can to keep the government out of the mix. "The government," they say, "has done enough already. Thank you very much!"\
