Aromatherapy Information and Benefits:

Aromatherapy is an alternative medicine that is totally noninvasive. There are five ways in which substances can be added to the human body, through the mouth, through the nose, through the anus, surgically, and through the skin. The only totally noninvasive and passive methods are through the nose and through the skin, and that's how aromatherapy works.

Aromatherapy makes use of the oils that are extracted from plants and herbs. These aromatic oils (essential oils) are applied to the body in one of two ways: they are mixed with carrier oil and massaged into the skin, or they are added to bath water or included in candles and the scent is inhaled.

There are those who doubt that inhaling the essences of essential oils has any effect on the body. Their doubts are misguided. The nose has a direct link to the brain. If that weren't true, ether, smelling salts, chloroform, or poisonous gases wouldn't affect the body.

There's scientific proof of the effects of inhaling essential oils. Studies of brain wave frequency prove that smelling lavender increases alpha waves in the back of the head. Alpha waves are associated with relaxation. And conversely, smelling jasmine increases beta waves in the front of the head. Beta waves are associated with a more alert state.

The skin is an amazing body organ — and, yes, it IS an organ. It's an external organ that is often referred to as the third kidney. Human skin can absorb substances and deliver messages to the brain and nutrients to the body. Think about hormone patches or nicotine patches. Aromatherapy massage works in the same way.

Essential oils are mixed with carrier oils and then applied by a masseuse. It's believed that essential oils are more readily absorbed by the body when they are applied to areas of the body where there are more hair follicles and sweat glands such as the genitals, head, soles, palms, and armpits.
