The Canadian Holistic Medical Association defines holistic medicine as "a system of health care which fosters a cooperative relationship among all those involved, leading towards optimal attainment of the physical, mental emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health."
The CHMA continues its definition as follows: It (holistic medicine) emphasizes the need to look at the whole person, including analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, social, spiritual and lifestyle values. It encompasses all stated modalities of diagnosis and treatment including drugs and surgery if no safe alternative exists. Holistic medicine focuses on education and responsibility for personal efforts to achieve balance and well being."
The American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) was founded in 1978, and today is 15,000 members strong and growing.
Some holistic medicine practitioners reject the use of all prescription drugs, while others incorporate traditional Western medicine with other alternative medicine disciplines in order to treat the whole person.
Holistic medicine focuses is how the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual elements of the body are interconnected and interwoven to accomplish wellness. Holistic medicine practitioners believe that when any one part of the body, mind, or spirit isn't working correctly, the entire mind and body is affected. The focus of holistic medicine is not on a particular disease or on a particular body part that isn't functioning, but rather on the whole person.
Responsible holistic medicine practitioners do not discount modern Western medicine. They don't claim that ONLY the holistic approach will cure a patient. Those who do make such claims really should not be trusted with your life or the lives of your loved ones.
Holistic medicine IS effective, and it DOES bring relief, and it DOES promote health and healing; but holistic medicine isn't a magic bullet. Holistic medicine can't cure incurable diseases. And claims of such healings have never been proven.
